Activities in the LMC
Young AuthorsEach year during January and February, children have the opportunity to participate in the Young Authors program. This program is intended to promote literacy by developing children's writing habits. Children create books, and a school representative attends the Young Authors Conference at ISU in Normal Illinois during May. = Top = Birthday BooksWe have a great way to commemorate your child's birthday. It works like this: parents can recognize a child's birthday by donating a book to the LMC. If parents have signed up, as the child's birthday approaches, we will ask the child to come to the LMC to pick a book off of the Birthday Book cart. The parent will receive confirmation and will be notified of the cost. When we receive payment for the book, we will take a picture of the child holding the book. That picture, along with a dedication, will be placed in the front of the book to commemorate the child's birthday. Of course, this can be a wonderful way to commemorate Grandma's birthday, or Aunt Tootie's birthday as well. I should mention that here in the LMC, we feel that pets are like family members. : ) If you would like another signup form and information sheet, give us a call at 375-3707, or email me. = Top = Book FairsOur fall book fair
features
a wide selection of hardcover and softcover books, including many
great gift ideas. Sounds like a commercial, doesn’t it? It is. This
fair is also the LMC fundraiser. We earned over $2000.00 for
the LMC. A second book fair will
be
held in May. Rebecca CaudillSo who is Rebecca Caudill? Rebecca Caudill was born in Harlan County, Kentucky on February 2, 1899. As a writer of children's books, she often wrote about her childhood in Kentucky. Books by Rebecca Caudill include Barrie and Daughter, Tree of Freedom, and School House in the Woods. Rebecca Caudill died on October 2, 1985. In 1987, the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award was established to honor her. This award is unique because the winner is selected by children. Each year, in February, children in grades four through eight vote for their favorite book from a list which has been selected by a nominating committee. The prerequisite to voting is that the student must have read, or have had read to him/her, at least three of the titles on the list. For more information about this award and a list of the nominees, visit www.rebeccacaudill.org. = Top = Monarch AwardAnother children's choice award in Illinois is the Monarch Award. Each year, in February, children in Kindergarten through grade three vote for their favorite book from a list which has been selected by a nominating committee. The prerequisite to voting is that the student must have read, or have had read to him/her, at least five of the titles on the list. For more information about this award and a list of the nominees, visit http://www.islma.org/monarch.htm. = Top = Reading IncentivesThrough an incentive offered by Six Flags Theme Parks, Owls can earn free tickets to Six Flag's Great America. As you can see, in Owl country, we take reading seriously. Ozzie's Reading Club is another incentive we offer each year. This incentive program is hosted by the Kane County Cougars. What better way to get ready for spring? Here is a brief run-down of our reading incentives, which will begin after winter break. Six Flags 6 Hour Reading Club

Remember, it is okay to double dip.
Apply the same minutes to both of our reading incentives! For more
information about any of these programs, contact your child's teacher
or Mr. Stedman.
